Ogunquit Performing Arts announces the opening of the 14th season of the Classic Film Series with the showing of La Strada on Sunday October 12, 2014, 2 pm at the Dunaway Center in Ogunquit
La Strada (The Road), the 1954 Italian drama directed by Federico Fellini, considered by the American Film Institute to be “one of the most influential films ever made” will be Ogunquit Performing Arts’ opening presentation of the 14th annual Classic Film Series. According to co-chair Janel Lundgren, “OPA is also presenting the film at a new time and day: Sunday October 12, 2014 at 2 pm. Winter nights get dark early so attendees can plan on getting home in at least a little daylight!”
The film stars Anthony Quinn, Giulietta Masina and Richard Basehart. It has been said that there has never been a face like that of Giulietta’s. Her perfectly round clown’s face and wide innocent eyes that evoke both innocence and sadness, a persona that she carries into her future films.
In the film, Gelsomina (Guilietta Masina) is sold by her mother for 10,000 lire and a few kilos of food, to the employ of Zampano (Anthony Quinn), a brutal traveling strongman who tours Italy in a ramshackle caravan pulled by a motorcycle. He needs Gelsomina as an assistant for his act, but doesn’t treat her well. They join up with a traveling circus where Zampano runs into his old rival, tightrope artist The Fool (Richard Basehart.) This meeting doesn’t end well.
Anthony Quinn gives a memorable and brilliant performance showing animal instincts rarely seen on the screen. Guilietta Masina’s performance as the simpleton is perfect as she cries out for compassion. Richard Basehart plays the fool of the circus, but one wonders if he really is.
La Strada won the inaugural Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1956 and placed fourth in the 1992 British Film Institute directors’ list of cinema’s top 10 films.
